Kevin Sampson to attend Clapperboard screening of Awaydays

AWAYDAYS is a 2009 British film directed by Pat Holden based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Kevin Sampson. The film will be screened at FACT on Mon 20 Feb as part of the Clapperboard presents series. Sampson and producer Dave Hughes will participate in a Question and Answer session with the audience after the screening.

The film, made on location on Merseyside, stars Nicky Bell, Liam Boyle, Stephen Graham, Holliday Grainger, Oliver Lee, Rebecca Atkinson and Sasha Parkinson and follows Paul Carty (Nicky Bell), a 19 year-old in the aftermath of his mother's death. Carty is fascinated by The Pack - a legendary group of football hooligans who wear Peter Storm jackets, carry stanley knives and follow Tranmere Rovers F.C.

Carty harbours dreams of travelling the world or going to art school, but he's in a rut. He lives in a middle class suburbia with his silently grieving father and his feisty young sister, Molly. Carty works as a junior civil servant and spends all his wages on gigs, clubs, records and football. It's at a gig that he finally gets talking to Elvis (Liam Boyle), an enigmatic kid he's admired from afar. Meeting Elvis changes everything; he's part of the legendary gang, The Pack. They dress in a cultish, almost effeminate style that's at odds with the Boneheads and Bootboys they fight against. They have androgynous wedge haircuts worn with Lacoste tennis shirts, Lois jeans and Adidas Forest Hills training shoes. For as long as he has been going to football, Carty has been entranced by The Pack. Now Elvis is offering him a way in....

Writer, Kevin Sampson said... "Red Union Films is excited to be working with Clapperboard on this special presentation of Awaydays. Both Dave and myself are long-time admirers of Clapperboard's work in the local community and beyond, channelling the creativity of young people and helping take those first critical steps to fulfilling their aspirations. It's a cracking set-up and we're made up to be involved."

Clapperboard Presents... is an exciting initiative re-visiting and celebrating the groundbreaking work of award-winning artists including Alison Steadman, Chris Eccleston, Ian Hart, Dave Morrissey, Crissy Rock, Tina Malone, and many more professionals from in front and behind the camera. Income raised from this event will go towards the Clapperboard Youth Project.

Clapperboard Director, Maureen Sinclair said.. "I'm extremely proud to be showcasing the work of two amazing industry professionals from Merseyside. We have an amazing pool of creative talent here and I'm forever grateful of their support to Clapperboard."

Tickets are £12 (£9 concs), which includes a complimentary drink at 3345 Parr Street after the screening. Tickets are available from FACT Box Office.
