In a week of turmoil for the Liverpool music scene with two venues closing their doors, it was a welcome boost that Eric's hosted an EP launch party for local five piece folksters Bird. Jo Nettleton reviews...
As we descend into the warm basement of Eric's, folk rock outfit Edwardian Picnic have the party well started, enticing a fair crowd with their energetic set. It's hard to believe this was the debut gig for the 8 piece band – they rocked!
The Fifth Movement return the favour for Bird at the launch of their EP Phantoms. The Fifth Movement EP 'This Brewing Storm' was launched back in October at the Masque supported by Bird. Tonight at Eric's, lead singer Kevin Critchley soon silenced the chatty crowd with his captivating and powerful vocals and in a touching reference to the shock news of the closure of the Masque and the CUC, he aptly dedicates Stop the Chaos. With the beautifully sounding string section and high energy performance from all members, this band delivers a stunning live set.
Headlining act Bird light up the stage, literally and musically, with the perfect blend of charismatic folk, haunting vocals from songwriter / singer Adele Emmas and a selection of the lighting department of the local Homebase.
This band has had a busy year with a packed schedule across the region – in fact, I'm listening to them as I write, on Radio Merseyside! I'd been looking forward to seeing them live since catching the end of their set at Southport Rocks and was not disappointed! Here at Eric's to launch their eagerly awaited EP Phantoms, this 5 piece ensemble provides the perfect soundtrack to compliment the atmospheric setting of the venue.
