This weekend saw pop’s reigning princesses The Saturdays bring their All Fired Up tour to Liverpool’s Echo arena as part of their first full UK arena tour. We sent along our reporter Laura Mallaber to find out more...
For all those eager and excited fans who like myself arrived shortly after the doors opened, we were treated to no less than three support acts. The first act ‘NVS’, a five piece group can be commended for their energy and persistence with the crowd however, after a quick glance round it seemed to me that for this predominately young female audience the energy and enthusiasm of the group was not to be reciprocated.
Next was solo artist ‘Daniela Brooker’ as she glistened onto stage dressed head to toe in glitter, immediately she seemed more appropriate to the overall tone of the night. I was pleasantly surprised by her set which was far more soulful than I had imagined, a mixed bag containing the essence and vocal of Joss Stone but with the polished styling of Girls Aloud or indeed the headline act themselves. This girl certainly has a undeniable stage presence and is one to watch out for in the future, her debut single ‘Forget About Yesterday‘ is out in February.
Lastly, the two piece girl band ‘Oh My!’ bounded onto the stage again full of vitality and completed a dynamic well rehearsed set, by now however the crowd seemed restless and just in waiting for the show to begin… and so the lights fell and a feeling rippled through the crowd in knowing the show was about to begin!
As the curtain fell, the eye was drawn to centre stage where a mesh elevator was descending towards the crowd, this production was choreographed in union with the music video playing on the giant screens. The elevator reached the floor of the stage and out stepped the five girls belting out their recent top ten single ‘Notorious’, dressed in office wear, stockings, stilettos and black rimmed glasses, there was here I’m sure a little something for the dads and boyfriends in the audience.
After their first couple of songs, they made sure to stop to greet the crowd who have continued to support them, a nice moment came with the acknowledgement of band member Una’s pregnancy which initiated a round of applause from the arena and left her looking humbled from the warm reaction. This moment lent itself well to the overall atmosphere of the night which seemed like a giant girly ‘sing-along’ party, the girls continued to interact with the audience throughout using a walkway which extended into the middle of the crowd.
The group energetically continued through their set list with a mixture of new material from their latest album ’On Your Radar’ and old favourites such as the sing -along ballad ‘Issues‘ and their cover of ‘Just Can‘t Get Enough‘. As could have been predicted this was split up with a number of quick costume changes from the ’dress up box’ from fantasy office wear, neon ‘raver-like’ costumes, sparkling sequinned dresses to my personal favourite little fur trimmed Santa outfits which they wore while covering ‘Walking in a Winter Wonderland‘ as snow sprinkled down and coated the arena with a sheet of glitter.
The Saturdays did not disappoint by sending their fans home with the feel good factor after dancing and singing along with the quintet throughout the 90 minute show. This show is a must see for any lovers of pure pop music and went a way to prove that although other genres of music come and go there is always a place for pop!
