Innovative, new, community theatre company Grin Productions is furthering its dedication to new writing by staging five plays written, rehearsed and performed within 24 hours. Playwrights are selected by submission and successful authors grouped together before an all-night writing session.
“Grouping authors is something that is considered very unusual, people think of writers as locked up by themselves typing away all day,” explained Festival Organiser, Rachael White. “But forming these writing co-ops is a great way for people to encounter new ideas and find their work pushed in new and interesting ways.”
Each writing co-op is given a choice of two titles and no limit of where they take the story. By early morning Grin assigns each of the five groups a director and then its time to cast! Following a whirlwind day of learning and rehearsing the script, by 7pm the curtains are up and each of the shows are performed.
“This is a really exciting project for us,” says Grin Productions Artistic Director, Kiefer Williams. “The Play In A Day Festival is an amazing way for us to find and showcase newtalent. Liverpool has such a rich theatre heritage and we are really proud about creating this grass roots opportunity.”And what is in it for the audience?
“By creating something in 24 hours we can create five fresh, new and really reactionary plays to what is happening right at that moment.” Rachael adds.
The whole project is to be accompanied by an ongoing Twitter feed, allowing audience members to follow the entire 24 hours.
