It is every producer's worst nightmare. An actor is taken ill halfway through a sellout run and there is no understudy available. What can you do? If it is Royal Court Liverpool then you turn to the Front Of House staff list. It helps when you see the name of Jamie Hampson – star of the recent production of You'll Never Walk Alone. Having only picked up a script at midday on Tuesday, she was on stage at 8pm performing to a packed house.
Rachel Rae, who plays the part of Donna Marie, fell ill with an ear infection over the New Year and doctors have ordered that she has a week's full rest. With packed houses every night for the Christmas smash hit Little Scouse On The Prairie things were looking bleak for the theatre. Then Jamie stepped in.
Jamie Hampson: "I was really surprised to get the call but I couldn't turn it down. The show is so much fun to watch but it is even more fun to be up there on stage! Rachel is a good mate of mine so I hope that she gets better soon but in the meantime I'm made up to be filling in for her."
Jamie's first performance was on Tuesday 4 January with a script in hand but the script only appeared once or twice on Wednesday 5 and is gone by her third performance. She will continue in the role until next week when Rachel Rae will be well enough to return.
Kevin Fearon, Chief Executive of Royal Court Liverpool: "When Rachel fell ill we were in a really tricky situation. With so many people coming to the show we couldn't cancel but Rachel needed time to recover. Jamie has been working here over Christmas and we know how good she is so we are delighted that she stepped in. She has seen the show plenty of times so was partially prepared for the role and her performances have been magnificent! The rest of the cast and the MD have been brilliant too, coming in to help her rehearse and looking after her as she beds in."
Little Scouse On The Prairie recently extended and the show runs until 21 January. Written by Fred Lawless, the full cast from last year's hit, Scouse Pacific, have teamed up again along with Director Bob Eaton and Musical Director Howard Gray
The gang from Secosu are back but this time they have wound up in the Wild West! Donna Marie is very lost after a magical trip on a lambanana leaves her high and dry in a saloon bar and Bad Bart is in town with menace on his mind. Throw in a retired gunslinger and a barnload of homebrew and we've got a show!
Will the town be saved by the new sheriff who is quick on the draw? Will the French dancing girls lead the poor Shaolin Priest astray? Will we get through the show without making a filthy joke about bucking broncos?
Packed with music and gags this is a great night out to celebrate Christmas. Well, to celebrate anything really. Just get down here for one of the theatre's craziest, funniest shows ever. We'll have you laughing 'til the cowboys come home!
